Moot Court is an extracurricular activity at many law schools, participant take part in simulated or arbitration proceedings, usually involving drafting memorials or memorandum and participating in oral arguments. In most countries the phrase “Moot Court” may be shortened to simply “Moot ” or “Mooting” participants either are referred as “Mooters” or less conventionally “Mooties” .

Moot court involves a stimulated appellate court or arbitral case which is different from a mock trial which is different from mock trial that involves a stimulated jury or bench trial (Trial Advocacy). Moot court does not involve actual testimony by witness, cross examination, or the presentation of the evidence its focused solely on the application of the to a common set of evidentiary assumptions, facts and classification to which competitors are introduced through not moot in the traditional sense. Alternative dispute resolution competitions focusing on mediation and negotiation have also branched themselves as moot competitors in recent times, as had role playing competitions in the past.

Moot Court is one of the key extracurricular activities in many law schools around the world. Depending on the competition students may spend a semester researching and writing submissions or memorial and another semester practicing their oral arguments, or may prepare both within the span of few weeks. Whereas domestic moot court competitions tend to focus on municipal law such as criminal law or contract law regional and international moot court competitions tends to focus on cross border and subjects such as Public International law, International trade law, Humanitarian rights etc.

As students from different places and college come to represent themselves, it gives an opportunity to get the exposure to the outside world.

Participating in the Moot Court competitions help us in enhancing our researching skills because it is our research on the basis of which we will be fighting our case and representing our side. This will also help in enhancing our skills as to how to adopt to prompt situations and how one can tackle situations when he is at unease.

Mooting helps an individual to build his confidence in communicating and putting his view in front of the people it helps a person to build his confidence to such an extent that he does not fear to question or to speak in front of anybody and can fight cases efficiently.

Mooting helps in giving the practical implication and knowledge to the students who are studying law in such a way which they will never find in the books and would be unaware of, as practical and theoretical knowledge are like two different sides of a same coin.

Moot court competitions taka place in the school or college who organizes it and various teams from colleges come and participate in the event. The team comprises of three students with one as the researcher and other two as the speaker presenting their arguments on either side this teaches the students to perform well when they are together in as a team and analyze what are their strength and weakness. It also helps to work with people who are different from each other and also teaches how to coordinate with each other.
